Pet Travel Requirements: Complete Checklist

All pets travelling to France must meet specific health and identification requirements. Here’s exactly what you need.

Essential Documents & Requirements

📋 What Your Pet Needs

**1. MICROCHIP** *(MUST be done first)*
• 15-digit ISO microchip implanted by vet
• Microchip MUST be implanted BEFORE rabies vaccination
• If microchip done after rabies vaccination, need new rabies jab
• Cost: £15–30 at vet
• Takes 5 minutes

**2. RABIES VACCINATION**
• Primary rabies vaccination by vet
• Must be at least 21 days old before travel
• Valid for 3 years (booster before expiry)
• Recorded in Animal Health Certificate
• Cost: £50–90 depending on vet

**3. ANIMAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE (AHC)**
• Required for ALL GB residents travelling to the EU — including France — from 22 April 2026
• This applies regardless of whether you previously held a UK or EU pet passport
• AHC must be issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV) 10 days or less before travel
• Valid for a single outbound journey (and return within 4 months of issue)
• You need a new AHC for each trip
• Cost: £100–150 per trip

**4. TAPEWORM TREATMENT** *(dogs only)*
• Dogs ONLY (cats exempt)
• Treatment with praziquantel or approved alternative
• Must be administered 1–5 days (24–120 hours) before arrival in France
• Recorded in AHC by vet
• Cost: £20–40
• MUST be done by vet (not home treatment)

**5. BOOKING CONFIRMATION**
• Pet must be declared when booking ferry
• Pet fee: £20 per pet, per way
• Vehicle passengers can add pet during online booking; foot passengers must call DFDS: +44 33 058 787 87

⚠️ CRITICAL: The microchip MUST be implanted BEFORE the rabies vaccination. If microchip is done after rabies vaccination, the rabies vaccination is not valid and you’ll need a new one. This is the most common mistake pet owners make. Always: microchip first, then rabies vaccination.

Animal Health Certificate: What GB Residents Need to Know (April 2026 Update)

⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE — April 2026: New EU rules came into force on 22 April 2026. All GB residents (England, Scotland and Wales) must now use an Animal Health Certificate to travel with pets to the EU. This applies even if you previously held a UK pet passport issued before 2021, or an EU pet passport obtained from a French or other EU vet. The UK government and DEFRA have confirmed: the only valid document for GB residents travelling with pets to France is now the Animal Health Certificate. Check the latest guidance at gov.uk/taking-your-pet-abroad before you travel.

Document Type Valid for GB Residents? Cost
UK Pet Passport (any date) ✗ NOT valid for EU travel
Need Animal Health Certificate instead
N/A — cannot use
EU Pet Passport (obtained from EU vet, held by GB resident) ✗ No longer valid from 22 April 2026
EU passports can only be issued to and used by EU residents
N/A — cannot use
Animal Health Certificate (AHC) ✅ Yes — only valid document for GB residents
✅ Covers single trip (return within 4 months of issue)
✅ Must be issued 10 days or less before travel
✅ Issued by Official Veterinarian (OV)
£100–150
per trip

**WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?**

If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, you need an Animal Health Certificate for every trip to France with your pet. This is now the only accepted document regardless of what paperwork you may have used before. The AHC costs £100–150 and must be obtained from an Official Veterinarian no more than 10 days before you depart.

**IS THERE A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE?**

No cost-saving workaround now exists for GB residents. EU pet passports can only be issued to pet owners whose main residence is within the EU — so having one obtained from a French vet is no longer a valid option. The AHC is the required document for every trip.

Pet Travel Timeline: When to Start

Pet travel paperwork takes time. Here’s your complete timeline from first steps to ferry boarding.

📅 Complete Pet Travel Timeline

**8–12 WEEKS BEFORE TRAVEL:**
✓ Check if your pet has a microchip (if not, book vet appointment)
✓ Check rabies vaccination status (must be at least 21 days old on travel date)
✓ Book vet appointment for any missing requirements
✓ Find an Official Veterinarian (OV) in your area who can issue an Animal Health Certificate

**6–8 WEEKS BEFORE TRAVEL:**
✓ Microchip appointment (if needed) — £15–30
✓ Rabies vaccination (if needed or booster due) — £50–90
✓ Wait 21 days after rabies vaccination before travel is permitted

**2–4 WEEKS BEFORE TRAVEL:**
✓ Book ferry crossing AND add pet to booking (£20 pet fee per way)
✓ Decide onboard accommodation: dog kennels (£20, bring own bedding), pet cabin (cabin price + £20 supplement), or stay in vehicle (£20 fee)
✓ Book pet cabin if desired (limited — only 3 pet cabins per ship, sell out in summer)

**10 DAYS BEFORE TRAVEL:**
✓ Book appointment with Official Veterinarian (OV)
✓ OV inspects pet, checks microchip, reviews vaccination records
✓ OV issues Animal Health Certificate (covers outbound journey and return within 4 months)
✓ Cost: £100–150
✓ AHC MUST be issued 10 days or less before departure — no earlier

**1–5 DAYS BEFORE TRAVEL:**
✓ **DOGS ONLY:** Tapeworm treatment by vet
✓ Must be 24–120 hours (1–5 days) before check-in at ferry
✓ Vet records treatment in AHC
✓ Cost: £20–40

Check-In with Your Pet

What to expect when checking in at Newhaven Ferry Port with your pet.

Check-In Procedure

**ARRIVING AT PORT:**

1. **Arrive 90 minutes before departure** (extra time for pet checks)
2. **Vehicle passengers with pets:** Check in at vehicle check-in lanes
3. **Foot passengers with dogs:** Check in at the passenger terminal
4. Keep pet on lead at all times (or in carrier)

**AT CHECK-IN DESK:**

✓ Animal Health Certificate
✓ Microchip scan (they scan to verify chip number matches AHC)
✓ Rabies vaccination record (must be 21+ days old)
✓ Tapeworm treatment record (dogs only, 1–5 days old)

**TIME:** Pet check-in adds 5–10 minutes to standard check-in.

**IF DOCUMENTS INCORRECT:**
Your pet will be refused entry to France. This is strictly enforced. Common issues:
• Rabies vaccination less than 21 days old
• Tapeworm treatment outside 1–5 day window
• Microchip number doesn’t match AHC
• AHC issued more than 10 days before travel

**IF REFUSED:** You must rebook for a later date or travel without pet (pet stays home).

Boarding with Your Pet

**VEHICLE PASSENGERS:**
• Board in your vehicle as normal
• Pet on lead or in carrier
• Park vehicle where directed
• Staff will direct you to kennels (dogs), pet cabin, or pet stays in your locked vehicle

**FOOT PASSENGERS WITH DOG:**
• After check-in at passenger terminal, you will board via passenger shuttle bus or DFDS vehicle depending on duty arrangements
• Crew will meet you and direct you to kennels or pet cabin
• Then proceed to passenger decks

**PET CABIN BOARDING:**
• Follow staff directions to cabin deck
• Pet must be on lead inside cabin
• You can stay in cabin or use passenger facilities
• Pet must remain in cabin (cannot bring to restaurant/lounges)

During the Crossing

What happens during the crossing depending on your pet’s accommodation.

**IF DOG IN KENNELS:**
• Dog is in supervised kennel on vehicle deck
• Crew checks on pets regularly
• Water bowl kept topped up
• To visit your dog during the sailing, head to the Guest Service Centre and crew will assist
• Bring your own bedding — this is not provided

**IF PET IN CABIN:**
• You stay with pet in cabin
• Pet must remain on lead
• You can leave cabin to use restaurant/facilities, but pet must stay in cabin
• Cannot bring pet to passenger areas
• You’re responsible for any mess (pet blanket, bowl and poo bags provided in cabin)
• Maximum 2 pets per cabin

**IF PET IN VEHICLE:**
• Pet remains in locked vehicle
• To check on your pet during the sailing, head to the Guest Service Centre and crew will assist
• Ensure window is left slightly open for ventilation
• Water bowl should be left accessible
• Lock vehicle and disable alarm

💡 Calming Tip: Give your pet a good walk before boarding (toileting opportunity). Tired pets are calmer pets. Many owners find a 30-minute walk before boarding significantly reduces pet anxiety. Newhaven has green spaces near the port for pre-boarding walks.

Arrival in France with Your Pet

What happens when you arrive in Dieppe with your pet.

**DISEMBARKATION:**

• Ferry docks at Dieppe (approximately 16:00–17:00 French time for daytime crossing — check your specific sailing time on the DFDS website, as schedules vary by season)
• Vehicle passengers collect pet from kennels/cabin/vehicle
• Walk with pet off ferry
• French border control checks:
– Animal Health Certificate
– Microchip (may scan)
– Rabies vaccination record
• Usually 2–5 minutes per passenger
• If documents correct: cleared immediately

**IF DOCUMENTS INCORRECT:**
Pet may be refused entry to France and must return on next ferry back to UK (at your expense).

**TOILETING OPPORTUNITY:**
• Dogs need toilet break after crossing
• Poo bags required (bring your own)
• Green spaces available in Dieppe town (20-minute walk from port, or take taxi)

**FRENCH PET REGULATIONS:**
• Dogs must be on lead in public areas
• Poo bags mandatory (fine if caught without)
• Dogs allowed in most outdoor cafés/restaurants
• Some beaches allow dogs (check local rules)
• Taxis may refuse dogs (warn taxi driver when booking)

Return Journey to UK

Bringing your pet BACK to the UK has DIFFERENT requirements.

**RE-ENTRY TO UK REQUIREMENTS:**

✓ **Same as outbound:** AHC (your outbound AHC is valid for the return journey if returning within 4 months of issue), microchip, rabies vaccination
✓ **Tapeworm treatment:** Dogs need ANOTHER treatment 1–5 days before UK arrival
✓ **Find French vet** in Dieppe to administer and record tapeworm treatment (cost: €20–40)

**IMPORTANT:** If you’re on a short trip (e.g., a day trip), you need TWO tapeworm treatments:
• One 1–5 days before leaving UK (for France entry)
• Another 1–5 days before returning to UK (for UK re-entry)

**ANIMAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE ON RETURN:**
• Your outbound AHC is valid for your return journey, provided you return within 4 months of it being issued
• If your trip is longer than 4 months, you will need a new AHC issued by an EU vet before you can return

**BOOKING RETURN FERRY:**
• Book return crossing same as outbound
• Add pet to booking (another £20 pet fee per way)
• Same accommodation options available

📋 April 2026 Change Note: From 22 April 2026, there is no longer a cheaper passport-based alternative for GB residents. All GB pet owners now require an Animal Health Certificate (£100–150) for every trip to France. If you previously used a pre-2021 UK passport or an EU passport obtained from a French vet, those documents are no longer valid. Plan your budget accordingly.

Expert Tips for Stress-Free Pet Travel

✓ Tip #1: Practice Car Journeys

If pet not used to long car rides, practice before ferry day. Take increasingly longer drives over several weeks. Builds confidence, reduces anxiety. On ferry day, the 1–2 hour drive to Newhaven won’t be overwhelming.

✓ Tip #2: Tire Them Out Before

Long walk or active play session before leaving home. Tired pet = calmer pet. Burns excess energy, makes them more likely to rest during crossing. Newhaven has green spaces for a pre-boarding walk.

✓ Tip #3: Bring Familiar Items

Pet’s blanket, favourite toy, item with your scent. In kennels or cabin, familiar smells reduce stress. Remember: bedding is NOT provided in kennels — you must bring your own. Makes a big difference to anxious pets.

✓ Tip #4: Don’t Feed Right Before

Feed pet 3–4 hours before boarding, not immediately before. Reduces motion sickness risk. Water is fine. If overnight ferry, small meal okay but not large dinner. Empty stomach = less nausea risk.

✓ Tip #5: Book Pet Cabin for First Trip

Consider booking a pet cabin for your pet’s first ferry crossing. Being with you dramatically reduces anxiety. Future trips, if pet handled it well, kennels or vehicle may be fine. Note: only 3 pet cabins per ship — book early.

✓ Tip #6: Anxiety Medication (Consult Vet)

For very anxious pets, ask vet about mild calming medication. Not sedation, just anxiety relief. Can make crossing much more pleasant for stressed pets. Must be prescribed by vet — discuss well before travel.

✓ Tip #7: Triple-Check Documents

Day before travel, check: microchip number matches AHC, rabies vaccination date is 21+ days old, tapeworm treatment is booked (dogs), AHC issue date is within 10 days of departure. Nothing worse than arriving at port and discovering a paperwork issue. Check EVERYTHING twice.

✓ Tip #8: Start Paperwork Early

8–12 weeks isn’t over-cautious, it’s necessary. Vet appointments book up, vaccination needs 21-day wait, AHC can only be done 10 days before. Last-minute rushed paperwork = mistakes and stress. Plan ahead!

Frequently Asked Questions: Pet Travel

Can I take my dog on the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry?

Yes, dogs are welcome on all Newhaven to Dieppe ferries. Requirements: Animal Health Certificate (AHC), microchip (must be done BEFORE rabies vaccination), rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel, tapeworm treatment 1–5 days before departure. Cost: £20 per pet, per way. Onboard options: dog kennels (£20, bring own bedding, 3 kennels only), pet-friendly cabin (cabin price + £20 per pet supplement), or dog stays in your vehicle. Start paperwork 8–12 weeks before travel.

How much does it cost to take a pet on the ferry to France?

Ferry pet fee: £20 per pet, per way. Setup costs (first trip only): microchip £15–30, rabies vaccination £50–90. Per trip for all GB residents: Animal Health Certificate £100–150, tapeworm treatment £20–40 each way (dogs only), ferry fee £20 each way. Optional: pet cabin supplement £20 per pet (in addition to cabin price from £32). Total first trip approximately £255–380 for a dog, £255 for a cat. Subsequent trips approximately £165–225 per round trip.

Do I need a pet passport to take my pet to France?

No — and from 22 April 2026, pet passports are no longer valid for GB residents travelling to the EU. All GB residents (England, Scotland and Wales) must use an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) to take their pet to France. This applies whether you previously used a UK-issued pet passport, or an EU pet passport obtained from a French or other EU vet. The AHC costs £100–150, must be issued by an Official Veterinarian no more than 10 days before travel, and covers one trip (return within 4 months of issue). You need a new AHC for each trip. See the latest official guidance at gov.uk/taking-your-pet-abroad.

Where does my pet stay during the ferry crossing?

Three options: (1) Dog kennels (dogs only) — £20 fee, 3 kennels onboard, bring own bedding; water provided; crew checks regularly; you can ask crew at Guest Service Centre about visiting your dog; (2) Pet-friendly cabin — cabin price + £20 per pet supplement; pet stays with you; only 3 pet cabins per ship so book early; (3) Stay in vehicle (vehicle passengers only) — pet in your locked car; leave window slightly open; you can ask crew to escort you to check on pet. Cats cannot use kennels and must stay in vehicle or a pet-friendly cabin.

How long before travel should I start pet paperwork?

Start 8–12 weeks before travel. Timeline: microchip first (if needed), then rabies vaccination (must wait 21 days after vaccination before travel), then get your Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian no more than 10 days before departure, then tapeworm treatment 1–5 days before ferry (dogs only). The 21-day rabies wait is the biggest time constraint. Vet appointments can book up quickly so start early.

Can cats travel on the ferry to France?

Yes, cats are welcome with the same requirements as dogs EXCEPT cats don’t need tapeworm treatment. Requirements: Animal Health Certificate, microchip, rabies vaccination 21+ days before travel. Cost: £20 per cat, per way. Cats cannot use the dog kennels — they must travel in your vehicle or in a pet-friendly cabin. Pet cabin is therefore the best option for anxious cats or foot passengers with cats (book by phone as foot passenger cabin bookings cannot be made online).

What is tapeworm treatment and when is it needed?

Tapeworm treatment is mandatory for DOGS entering France (cats exempt). Treatment with praziquantel or approved alternative, administered by vet 1–5 days (24–120 hours) before arrival in France. Costs £20–40. Recorded in the AHC. For return to UK, dogs need ANOTHER treatment 1–5 days before arriving back in UK — so two treatments for a round trip. Cannot be done at home — must be administered and recorded by a vet.

Can I visit my pet during the ferry crossing?

Yes — if your pet is in the kennels or your vehicle, head to the Guest Service Centre and crew will assist you in visiting your pet. The only way to spend the whole crossing with your pet is to book a pet-friendly cabin (cabin price + £20 per pet supplement), where your pet stays with you throughout. There are only 3 pet cabins per ship, so book early.

What happens if my pet’s documents are incorrect at check-in?

Your pet will be refused boarding and entry to France. Common issues: rabies vaccination less than 21 days old, tapeworm treatment outside 1–5 day window, microchip number doesn’t match AHC, Animal Health Certificate issued more than 10 days before travel. If refused, you must either travel without your pet or rebook for a later date when paperwork is correct. This is why checking documents thoroughly before travel is critical.

Can I take my pet as a foot passenger on the ferry?

Yes, foot passengers can travel with pets on the Newhaven–Dieppe route — this is the only English Channel ferry to allow this. You must book by phone (+44 33 058 787 87) as foot passenger pet bookings cannot be made online. Dogs can use the kennels (£20, bring bedding); cats and other pets must use a pet-friendly cabin. Check in at the passenger terminal. Pet fee is £20 per pet, per way. All the same documentation requirements apply.

Can I still use an EU pet passport I obtained from a French vet?

No. From 22 April 2026, EU pet passports held by GB residents are no longer valid for travel to the EU. EU pet passports may only be issued to and used by people whose main residence is within the EU. Even if your EU passport was issued before April 2026 by a French vet, it can no longer be used if you are resident in Great Britain. You must obtain an Animal Health Certificate for every trip. See gov.uk/taking-your-pet-abroad for the latest official guidance.
